Focusing on the Pin or the Target?

January, 2007 Tip of The Month Where should the focus be?

I have been asked many times over the years, "Should I focus on the pin or the target?"  The question pertains to archers using modern pin sights on their bows.  Over the years I have tried both.  I have decided  focusing on the target rather than the pin, works best for me.  I figured it out at a 3-D shoot in Louisiana some years ago.  It was My first time to shoot an ASA event that utilized the Rinehart targets with the offset Pro ring 12.  I had never shot those targets before and was quite confused as to where to hold on some of them. When doubt entered my mind I would focus on the pin.  Those shots were the furthest from the intended spot I wanted to hit by far.  Finally I settled down, picked a spot, regardless of certainty of the location of the 12 ring, I would just put all of my focus on the exact spot I wanted to hit and my pin, (aiming dot) would become just a blur, floating in the spot.  More times than not my arrow found it's mark and I ended up with a great score.

Since that day in Louisiana, regardless of venue, target, 3-D or Hunting, I focus on the exact spot I want to hit and let the pin become blurry and float.  The next time you're at the range try some shots at varying distances, try focusing on your sight pin on some of the shots and the target on others.  You may find this technique will help you as well.  Just remember, regardless of which style you pick, you must stick with it and execute that aiming style with every shot, other wise your consistency will drop off and so will accuracy. More on consistency next month!

When moving through the Turkey woods always keep a reed in your mouth.  You never know when an opportunity will present it's self.  Last spring while my son Travis and I were changing locations in mid afternoon we stumbled up on six jakes.  I had my Primos Limb Hanger in my mouth, when the Birds suddenly Gobbled just a few yards in front of me, I dropped to one knee and let out a few soft yelps.  Seconds later I had all six birds 15 yards from me.  One well placed arrow dropped my first ever Archery Merriams.

Last Month's Bowhunting Tip

When using Scent Blocker suits in the early season, carry them in a scent proof pack or bag to your stand location. These suits can be hot when worn in conjunction with other cloths in early season. When stand hunting I wear a short sleeve T-shirt and shorts while moving to the stand and slip on my Scent Blocker suit before climbing into the stand. This tactic helps me remain cool and produces less unwanted scent from sweat.

When hunting Elk or Mule deer in the high country I keep the suite on my back pack. Once animals are spotted, just prior to the final stalk, I slip the suit on. I used this tactic this year to get in close on this 300 class Bull. I was able to slip in to 10 yards of the bull as he was down wind.
