July 30-31, 2005, Colorado Springs, CO.

Archers from 17 states competed at the State Games Of America Archery competition held at the United Sates Air Force Academy Saturday and Sunday, July 30th and 31st. There were champions crowned from states as far away as Hawaii, New York and Georgia. Saturday was a classic American 900 round and Sunday's competition was an IBO style 30 target course 3D shoot. The weather cooperated both days and the troublesome terrain and lengthy distances of the 3-d shoot challenged everyone at every level. Colorado Spring's own Marc Smith took home the Bronze both days. "I did not have time to set up a target bow so I just shot my 3-D set up both days and was pleasantly surprised at how well my Easton Eclipse 2212s performed at the 900 round" Marc explained. Marc competed in the Men's Compound Freestyle division for the F.I.T.A shoot on Saturday and the Men's Pro division at the 3-D's.

No More Monkey for Marc

I can not begin to tell you how many 58 and 59 X 300's I have fired. The perfect 60 X has eluded me for years. However that Monkey is off my back. On Nov 30 th shooting as a guest at the Archery Hut Sports Tuesday night league in Colorado Springs, I fired the coveted 60X. I was using my new 2005 Hunting Model, Hoyt Ultratec. I fired my 2613's flawlessly one at a time for twelve ends. I have to admit, knowing I had fired 59 x’s and still one to go shook me up a bit. I was sweating and my palms clammy. The entire shop stopped to witness the 60 th and final arrow. I began to draw, my arrow fell off the rest, my second attempt...the arrow bounced off again. Third try I pulled back to full draw, anchored and focused on the X, my dot reticle was a mere blur as I bore down on the X. I executed a perfect shot and the arrow landed dead center in the X. The entire shop let out a sigh of relief and then slaps on the back soon followed. One of my fellow archers and local rivals, Cotty Hayes was standing next to me and was the first to congratulate me. What made this night very special was another spectator watching, Jimmy Hambrick. Jimmy has been my Archery Coach and Mentor since 1998. Everything I know about Tournament archery and competing has been taught by Jimmy. I owe him big time, I would like to dedicate this perfect score to him, as a small token of appreciation for all he does and has done for the great sport of archery.
